Demolition Derby | New Hamburg, ON

The annual fall fair in New Hamburg was this weekend (September 17-20) with the demolition derby held yesterday.

What an amazingly gorgeous day it was for a fall fair! The new grandstand (unveiled only recently) was filled, as well as the safe zone area surrounding the “pit”. There were midway games & rides on the grounds too which were constantly busy!

We arrived around 1:00 and chose our seats – front row, right in the middle! This was the perfect vantage point for capturing some of the action.

Tour a Garden | Communities in Bloom, Waterloo ON

In 2007 & 2008, I was invited as a photographer to join the Waterloo Horiticultural Society along on their “Tour a Garden” tour. Visiting gardens of four-five Waterloo residents each year, I had great joy capturing a few images of their hard work!

I’m not much of a green thumb (don’t ask me what flower it is – I’ll tell you it’s a yellow one) but I love plants and flowers! The planning and execution of these private gardens is just amazing, and in every inch of each garden the artistry of the flora & fauna seems endless and seamless. I highly recommend the tour to anyone, and not just gardeners or photographers!

Unfortunately, there wasn’t a Tour in 2009, but I have high hopes that a team will pull together for 2010 :)

Please enjoy a few select images from the 2007 & 2008 Tours below!

Wrapping up Summer

September is here, and we’re already nine days in. Man OH man!

This month I have only one scheduled portrait session and one wedding booked, but as always, that could change. I enjoy spontaneous, last minute photoshoots! It seems to be my signature style.

So, a few times this month I’m going to post some of my old work in between the new photos… I was going through my calendar of the past three years and started to link blog entries with past events and I couldn’t believe how many events I haven’t shared about! :)

Are we there yet?!

I did get to enjoy a bit of a vacation this summer. During the first week of August I was back up in the Northern Bruce Peninsula with my husband & other families for a week at camp (same camp we always go to). We had a great time! The only downer – the vile mosquitoes! I could not believe how many bites I became victim to, or how itchy they were. Yikes!

The weather wasn’t perfect, but it wasn’t terrible! Lots of rain with sunshine, and it wasn’t hot and humid like it was in Kitchener. What a nice relief it was!
We spent a lot of time in the outdoors. I mean, it’s hard to avoid when you’re camping after all.

A few days before we left, a new travelling buddy arrived: Walter T. Ducket, and he spent the week with us, showing up in a few photos! (Click here to check out What the Duck – the best comic strip for photographers!)

Teaser – Jon & Susanna

More to come. Admittedly, this was my first all-RAW wedding, so it’ll take a bit longer to finish up the images captured that day.

What a beautiful couple, and what a beautiful location they chose to celebrate their marriage! I’ll gush more on that later… :-)

Toronto Zoo Adventure

Back in July I was able to take a day to go visit the Toronto Zoo. What a hot summer day it was! My mom came with me, and we spent seven hours walking around the park in the blazing sunshine. The best part? Getting a free ticket in! The couple in line ahead of us had a spare ticket and asked if we wanted it. How nice!!

So, I just wanted to post a couple photos I took that day… There are plenty more on my Flickr page!

Engagement – Lisa & Tony

What an energetic family! Energetic, beautiful and hilarious! It was so much fun getting together with Lisa & Tony & family on sunny July 5th.

Quick note: I first met Lisa when she started working at the same firm I’m at. After we connected on Facebook, it was then we realized that through marriage, we are somewhat related! My husband’s uncle is also Lisa’s uncle. What a small world!

We staked out an area in St Jacobs behind the Ice Cream caboose. The sun was SO bright and I was thankful to find a giant tree providing us with some shade to capture some great images.

And for a super hot and bright morning, this family was so pleasant to work with. Thanks guys!

Oh and how could I forget the best part? This gorgeous couple & family will be off to Cuba in about a week to tie the knot! I’m so jealous and wish I could be there. I hope the weather is fantastic!

Photojournalism: Crash in Kitchener

Every once in awhile I find myself in the right place at the right time with my camera. I enjoy photojournalism and I’m thankful that our local media embraces this of the citizens. Here’s my story from what happened on Saturday afternoon.

We were about 10 cars back from the intersection when we heard the crash and saw the smoke rise up. Pretty scary.

My dad was driving with my mom, my husband and I in the car. After getting through traffic and pulling into the Weiland Ford dealership, I was able to get down closer to the crash at Homer Watson & Ottawa to capture a few images. From what we could see, the black car allegedly ran the red light, crashing into the Bridgestone pick up truck. The entire front end of the car was destroyed. The most frightening part was witnessing an infant being carried from the car and into an ambulance. What person in their right mind would attempt to run a red light (albeit allegedly) with a baby in the car? With passengers in the car? Considering running a red AT ALL?!

It’s unfortunate that other people had to suffer because of the driver’s arrogant decision, but I’m thankful they were all okay.

Why, why, why…

My husband’s car was totaled in 2006 when another driver ran a red light. She admitted to not paying attention and not seeing the colour of the light. Had the timing been a little off, who knows what would’ve happened to Nic.

PAY ATTENTION! Life is not replaceable! Let’s slow down and remember there are other people on the road and not just yourself.

One of the photos I took of the crash. I submitted it to CTV SWO news twenty minutes before the broadcast and it appeared in the program.

Little Ty Guy…and mom

A good friend of mine whom I met in college, invited me out to her house in Guelph, ON to snap some portraits of her and her son… whom I haven’t seen since he was just a few months old! Hard to believe how fast time flies.

We met up and headed out to Riverside Park where there are giant trees along the Speed River. Absolutely gorgeous and peaceful parkland! Little guy Ty decided to beeline straight for the river’s edge a few time, which kept both of us on our toes! It only takes a split second for a two-and-a-half year old to get into something he shouldn’t – seriously! Thankfully, we made it through the day without injury :-)

After the park, and after picking up a couple iced cappucinos from Tim Horton’s, we were off to the courthouse courtyard.

such.a.beautiful.place!! I haven’t been to the courthouse since I worked in Guelph… and I remember clearly that there was a bunny sitting in the grass just munching away, and there were birds singing… ahhh

Today was no different, four years later. While composing a few shots of the lovely Randi, I couldn’t help but notice a chipmunk run by. Hehe :-)

All in all, we had a great day! The weather was cooperative and not as stifling hot as it had been in the days before.

Thanks Randi & Ty for the opportunity for me to capture memories for you!

Northern Bruce Peninsula

A month ago I was back up north in the Bruce Peninsula. It’s truly a beautiful place at any time of year! Last time you’ll remember I was there in February for the family day long weekend. Everything was covered in ice and snow. In May, everything has grown and is so fresh. I think Spring is my favourite season of them all. Especially in May, when the Provincial flower of Ontario, the trillium, is in full bloom. They only last a couple weeks and it’s always in May.

Tobermory, ON

The Valentine’s weekend was also a long weekend here, with the Monday being Family Day. It’s a fairly new holiday – this is only the second year!
To take advantage of the long weekend, eight young adult friends and I traveled north to the church camp we’ve all been going to for years. Only this visit was my first time to be there in the winter! Shouldn’t be much different than winter in any other area in Ontario, right… well! I’ve never stood on a frozen lake only to be deafened by the absolute silence. It was pretty amazing. So amazing that I decided to venture a little farther north to the very tip of the Northern Bruce Peninsula.

IMG_2779_1600w

WOW! I’ve been up to Tobermory many, many times in the summer, but again, never in the winter. It was pretty neat. I was just amazed at just how silent it was… I could faintly hear a snowmobile across the Big Tub Harbour, as well as a dog barking nearby. I was wandering around the lighthouse for about 20 minutes before another couple showed up, also with a camera.

After admiring the area for awhile, I drove into the little village. Everything but the grocery store was shut down. Wow! I didn’t realize it would be that desolate in winter. So, I took a few shots in the area. It was really windy and frosty out, so I didn’t spend much time outside my car.
